MARTYR

I realize that most mothers out there are experts at the guilt trip but my mom takes the fucking cake.
She had minor surgery on her shoulder on Thursday. On Friday my brother and I both called her to see how she was feeling. She asked me if I wasn't busy if I could come down and spend the weekend massaging her shoulder (the one that she just had surgery to reconstruct). I told her I was going to be out of town camping. When I returned home to LA and recharged my dead cell phone I had this lovely text message waiting for me (which was also sent to my brother)
******************
Silly ol Mom!! I honestly thought you were coming over to see how I am feeling.... not! The only one who even cared called twice, .... offered her services ... if I needed anything .... and ... she brought flowers and came to visit me!! And, she even brought the boys Dylan & Raul, to have a piece of Apple pie that Dad bought. Hmmm I wonder who that was .... ?? .... ??... It was Letty!! Kudos to Letty!! LilyG

Mom guilt trips ENTIRE extended family.

Everyone says that their mother is "queen of the guilt trip". I would like to enter the following email into the contest:

September 10, 2011

Hi Cousins

I hope you received the invitation for the Yepiz & Navarro Reunion set for September 24th from 12:00-6:00p.m. I have reserved and paid for Camp Liberty which is the largest campsite at Liberty Park in Cerritos. I requested parking nearest to the campsite! If you read the invitation you will see that the 3rd driveway south of South Street and Studebaker Road is ours, just turn right and go straight back, you'll see the Camp Liberty structure to your left.

Many times I have heard some of you say, "When is the next Reunion?" and "Why don't you plan it?" I am happy to organize and present a day where we COUSINS can gather together. And I have planned this reunion for you! Que paso????

I was asked to prepare and distribute an E-mail Directory, you should have received it along with your invitation. I know that the directory is missing some cousins; send me their name & e-mail, I will reprint the directory. There are some cousins who still haven't been invited, please call and inform them for me!

I don't understand what the problem is??? I am not getting any positive responses except for 14 which are noted below. Will you please check and see who or how many in your family are coming and let me know?. So far there are only 14 people coming I have printed it so you'll know who has responded..

********************************************************************************
***************AT THIS POINT MY MOM NAMES EVERYONE WHO IS COMING AND THOSE WHO ARE NOT SHE WRITES OUT THEIR EXCUSE FOR NOT COMING*******************************************************

I am ready to cancel the Reunion for the 24th. I have reserved, deposited and paid $300 for Camp Liberty for all of you. I told the Liberty Park committee that there would probably be around 200 of us I'll wait till Monday, if I don't have a better response I'm going to cancel and hopefully get my money back!

PLEASE. Please check how many in your family are coming and e-mail me or call me!! Whatever the count is by late Monday I will notify you. THANKS!!!

Carinosamente, tu prima
Grace

Classic Mom Voicemail

This voice message shows all the characteristics of a typical message from my mother:
1. she complains that i haven't returned her last message
2. guilt trip for making her stay awake till 11:30 to see if i call her back
3. she holds information hostage. *note* the last message (the one i didn't return last night) also had this cryptic message "call me about next saturday i don't want you to miss out" ... also note I talked to her earlier in the day yesterday so I'm not really a deadbeat child who never talks to their mom... though she might disagree.
4. while she doesn't leave me the information she thinks i really need to know she adds extra pointless details like "i just got back from taking christie". it doesn't matter how many times i explain that i have a job and to just leave me the information on the message she still continues to hold "important" details hostage so i am forced to call her.
i should add that 90% of the time the information held hostage is completely interesting to me and doesn't involve me.

** i should also add my brother got a similar voicemail. he figured out the "important message" is that there is a bike tour in arrowhead and since my brother and i own bikes we obviously must either want to go watch people ride bikes or maybe take our bikes up there to ride them because god knows there is nowhere down here in LA where we could possibly ride our bikes.

I wonder if I should bring a sweater

This invitation perfectly illustrates what a conversation with my mother is like. The pencil markings are my dad's attempt to get my mom to revise her invitation. I wonder who will win...

for your on-the-go-communion-needs

Have you ever found yourself outside of church wishing you had the items necessary to perform a communion? Apparently my mom has and now she is armed and ready.

The Dutch & The Dutchess

I love that my mom leaves me voice mail messages about celebrities. I got a message on my phone once where she said "becky it's your mom. call me.... it's regarding janet jackson". She has also called me at work to tell me such important things as "Is there a TV near you? Can you go to it and turn it on channel 7? The Happy Days Reunion is on right now"
Luckily I signed up for google voice so now my voice messages are conveniently kept on the internet for me. Which means it's much easier to share my lovely messages with others.
Copy the link below to hear today's lovely message...

"i was just calling to tell you uh... the dutch and the dutchess are passing by your work. talk to you later bye."

2 things to note-
1. Her knowledge of Los Angeles is not the best. She thought I was near North Hollywood last month and should be warned about a gas leak. I had to tell her that while I'm in West Hollywood it is about a 20 minute drive over the hill to North Hollywood
2. The sad voice at the end is a common occurrence. It's like a built in guilt trip because I don't answer my cell phone when I'm at work.

Mom learns to "BLOG"

Apparently she's heard the word blog on television enough to repeat the word but not have any idea what it means.
My parents took a weekend trip up to San Francisco and during those 4 days my mom managed to send me 45 text messages.

FRIDAY-
TRISTADECAPHOBIA! Look it up. The GPS is turning us in circles, we missed 405 North in carpool lane it had us get off @ Sepulveda north and turn right at LaTijera whiich we missed turned right at Manchester and almost sideswiped an old man bicyclist continued then turned left on LaTijera and left on 405 north, now crawling. Mom :)

We are on our way! Shirley said they aren't going - Dale is in hospital with staph or cellulosis infection maybe 2-3 days. Christie is all excited, I have to co-pilot and interpret the annoying GPS! ..... BILY M :)

We're here in Elk Grove! Woke up at 5a.m, we had breakfast near Buttonwillow, Scrambled eggs with Spinach and cheese and a side of 2 pancakes, we shared, at IHOP! Have a nice weekend!

SATURDAY- I GET A PHONE MESSAGE ON MY HOME PHONE, A MESSAGE ON MY CELL PHONE... AND A MESSAGE ON MY WORK PHONE. THEN MY MOM CALLS MY BROTHER TO ASK HIM TO TEXT ME THE SAME QUESTION. SHE WANTS TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF WINE I DRINK. THEY ARE GOING WINE TASTING WITH MY DAD'S FRIENDS WHO WANT TO BUY ME A BOTTLE.

here's my text:
In yoga class I drink reds: Zinfandel, merlot, syrah, Pinot noir, Cabernet. I think one of my favorite wines is up there. Seghesio.

SHE CALLS MY PHONE RIGHT AFTER THIS TEXT DURING MY YOGA CLASS AND LEAVES ANOTHER MESSAGE. SHE THOUGHT I MIGHT WANT TO TALK TO MY DAD'S FRIEND.... DURING MY YOGA CLASS

the voice message is followed by this text:
Okay. They are still tasting wines...I've had a sip here & there. Frank has changed. I'll try to send you a photo. We just passed a billboard that said "RED RUM BURGERS!"

i wrote back after my class:
What area are you in? Still wine tasting?

mom:
No we left around noon, we are on I-80 passing Vacaville. Dad said we approx 50 mi from San Francisco. It is very cloudy and supposed to rain heavy tonight & tomorrow. I'm sure glad I convinced Dad to take the van, it's easier to get in & out, especially with the rain. We had lunch with Frank & Celina. SAN FRANCISCO the VERY VERY COLD and w-i-n-d-y city...Brrrrr

SUNDAY-
GOOD MORNING - Well the rain came thru last night, we never heard or saw it. Christie is thumbing her Better Homes & Gardens magazine. Dad went down the street to take pix of characters walking or strolling down the "Bay to the Breakers"event, cookoo characters & hippies and etcetera! We are in the lobby waiting for Mary, Glenn, Jay & his girlfriend who are coming from the airport to town on the BART. We will be going for breakfast, then we have to be at the Billy Graham Auditorium at noon for Jay's graduation which starts @ 2. Then to Burlingham for Mexican dinner at 6. It is very, very cold outside. Bobby Christie has been wearing the boots, Becky I have my scarf on. Dad's back from taking pictures, said it very cold & thousands of weirdos in costume running down street. :) See ya later!

JAIME'S graduation @ 2 we're waiting in Lodge 2nd floor in special section. Grad ends 5:00 then dinner in Burlingame 20 minutes from San Francisco.

This is followed by a series of very similar text messages sometimes with a picture of my cousin in his cap and gown attached:
HE DID IT! JAIME Class 2011 HE DID IT! Class of 2011 @ UC HASTINGS SCHOOL of LAW HE DID IT! JAIME Class 2011

Celebrating Jaime's graduation @ Zambas Restaurant ...it's Spanish cuisine not Mexican! We're going to try Paella Traditional...humph when I went to Spain I couldn't find a restaurant that served it and now I'm in Burlingame just outside of San Francisco and I FOUND IT!!

MONDAY-
We are coming home, just had lunch @ Coalinga's Denny's. Christie has been remarkably happy & energenic! It's 1:50 we should be 190 miles from L.A. And of course we have traffic still to come. Have a nice day! :) I love you!

Hi Punkin - have you read any of my texts??? No comments? Mom

2 minutes later she sends the same text again:
We are coming home, just had lunch @ Coalinga's Denny's. Christie has been remarkably happy & energenic! Here's Christie perusing her Better Homes & Garden. It's 1:50 we should be 190 miles from L.A. And of course we have traffic still to come. Have a nice day! :) I love you!

so i write back:
Yes very busy working eating lunch at desk now while working

her response:
Sorry :(

We are now passing Magic Mountain! We're going in for a few rides to wake us up!! Just kidding. :) We still have traffic ahead, I suggest 405 to 105 , Dad says the 5 thru town, haven't heard from GPS although it sure messed us up trying to get out of San Francisco, we had to make U-turns, double back , instructed us a left turn then said "Right turn!" it was so frustrating for Dad I drove and let Dad & Gps go mano a mano!! Ha-ha-ha! Well that's it for now, hope you enjoyed my Blogs of our trip. GPS just said remain on 5. Wow, GPS said take the 210! Rots of ruck! Adios/chow/adeau/later LOL :)

Happy Anniversary

Today is my parent's anniversary. I sent them this text message:
Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad :) love you

This is what my dad wrote back:
Thanks becky see you sunday

This is what my mom wrote back (note: She asked me to go to church with her last week. I respectfully told her I would not go. I stopped going to church 10 years ago)
Hi Punkin -"Thank you for the good wishes and love. We're celebrating 44 wonderful years!! Hard to believe ... especially with the number of years. Kim is at the house she offered to stay with Christie so we could go out for dinner ...and/ or spend the night at a motel. Love you and see you Sunday, maybe we could eat at the Mission Cafe... it opened today at 12:00 ... Have you considered coming to church with me? I took the day off so 2nd service is at 10:30 ... then we could spend more time together.

I reminded my brother it was their anniversary and a few hours later we both got this text from our mom:
Thank you! How about 44 years? Incomprehensible! The years are heartwarming and memorable, I wouldn't change a thing. The turbulant times drew us closer and our love and respect always grew stronger. I wouldn't change any of those life & marital lessons of life and emotions. God knew we were meant for each other. My God is Awesome and Sovereign. And He even blessed us with three perfect children ... you were each prayed for and I was rewarded & blessed!!. Love you Dad & Mom :)

p.s.- our dad is atheist. how much you want to bet he knows nothing about this message he helped send

Who's on First?

My mom has the awesome habit of asking you a question and then not paying attention when you answer her... then 5 minutes later asking you the same exact question. I'm very much used to this behavior in person but when you're texting someone you have the ability to go back and re-read what the other person wrote... unless you're my mom who will still not pay attention and ask you the same question.
In these series of text messages I am asking my mom to watch my dog Sophie. Christie is my sister.

March 28, 2011 5:26pm
Me:
Oh hey I've been meaning to ask if I can leave Sophie with you next Friday afternoon till next Sunday? I'm in my friends wedding and I'm planning on staying in Pasadena at the hotel near the ceremony.
Mom:
When is this? Christie has her Winter Game this Saturday April 2nd at Loyola-Marymount from 9:30 till 3:00 I thought you were planning on coming?
Me:
Yes Christies thing is THIS Saturday I am coming. The wedding is NEXT Saturday. I want to drop sophie off the day before and pick her up the day after.
Mom:
Is this Aura's wedding? I thought you said the wedding was the second weekend of April...the 9th?
Me:
Yes. April 9th. Next weekend. For aura.

Hallelujah!

This is a series of TEXT messages I received from my mom. The only information you need to know is that Jett is my best friend's precocious 4 1/2 year old daughter. My mom watches her on occasion.

January 28, 2011 5:12pm

Man! Unbelievable!!! Showed Parking pass, parked car, rode Tram to Theme Park ....looked for my card!! YES!! No card! Went thru my purse 5x's ... no card! What a bummer!! Jett was disappointed! :( I don't blame her!! I suggested getting Ice Cream ... walked thru Disney Store...came out Jett spotted and yelled. "Jamba Juice!!" Just then I spotted Baskin & Robbins... "Look!" I said "There's 31 Flavors ... let's get ice cream!" "No! I want an Orange Dream Machine!!! " So we got small drinks....walked out and....she said ... "Hey! I have a good idea. Now, let's get some Ice Cream!" ... :) ... "Oh No! Let's go back and look for my pass." ... I looked, and looked, AND LOOKED!! NO CARD/PASS!!! Left Disneyland and drove to

Acura....they looked, took my car in back...took out the seat...NO card!! :( ......So we're home now! Boy what a day! It's 4:45.

January 28, 2011 5:37pm

PRAISE THE LORD!! I FOUND MY PASS!! I found my card!! After once again going thru my purse, calling Disneyland, telling them what happened, they said I should go to the Ticketing Window and telling them what happened they would be able to

issue me a new card! GREAT! I'm home already. I was directed to also call Lost & Found. L-o-n-g s-t-o-r-y short ... lol ... I again prayed to Jesus to please show me where to find my card. HE said "Look in your water-bottle pouch!" What? " On faith

knowing HE knew where it was!! I looked in my water bottle pouch..... and WHUPP THERE IT WAS!! I LOVE MY JESUS and HE LOVES ME! Praise the LORD!! I'm so happpeee :)
